The Battle of Gettysburg (1863)
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought over three days from July 1-3, 1863, but the preparation and aftermath spanned 45 days. From mid-June to early August 1863, Confederate General Robert E. Lee planned his invasion of the North, fought the decisive battle, and then retreated back to Virginia. The First Transcontinental Railroad (1869)
The final construction phase of the First Transcontinental Railroad was completed in just 45 days during April-May 1869. From April 28 to May 10, 1869, crews from the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads raced to complete the final 690 miles of track. This rapid construction culminated in the famous Golden Spike ceremony at Promontory Summit, Utah, connecting the eastern and western United States by rail for the first time.
